INDUSTRIALISATION OF WESTERNPORT IS A THREAT TO FISHING AND RELATED BUSINESSES
The Federal & State government is proposing a Hydrogen Gas (From Brown Coal) transfer station at Crib Point. The dredging of Westernport will kill the seagrass which is where fish feed and breed. The ballast water from ships will bring in Northern Pacific Sea Star and Spartina Pests which destroy the natural ecosystem and wipe out fishing and recreation. Westernport Bay currently does not have Northern Pacific Seastar and Spartina and we do not want to see empty ships from Japan full of ballast water enter Westernport Bay. While ballast water is exchanged at sea, if one seastar remains in the hull it can produce thousands of larvae. The proposed trial threatens to bring in pests. We demand the site is monitored for years for marine pests, if a trial goes ahead and no full-blown project is begun.
The Government has set up a body they call Infrastructure Victoria to determine the site of Victorias next container port.
Powerful, well vested interests will push very hard to make this occur at Hastings. We need all Western Port water users, fisho's, yachties, beach walkers, etc to continue to fight to prevent environmental disaster. Fishing and tourism alone are worth a minimum $1.2 billion dollars p.a. to the regions economy.
"A container port at Hastings would require an estimated 24 million cubic meters of dredging - thats the equivalent of 15 MCG's fill of dredge"
Imagine what that would do to the recreational fishing industry? Fishing charters and Dive businesses would go broke. The ban on use of shipping lanes would exclude all those who currently use the area over holidays and weekends. The oceanic environment would be devastated. We need your help.
